Forty Under Forty

Print, web, motion graphics, art direction

For the Forty Under Forty special section, the theme was "channel your inner child," to convey the enthusiasm, curiosity and fun that successful businessmen and women need. This theme was thought up a couple months in advance, giving me time to build the "40/40" by hand for the cover. I worked with our photographer to take photos of the Legos for the wraparound cover, which required two images of the Legos to be merged together. I collaborated with my editor and decided to take the portraits of the honorees at the Sacramento Children's Museum, where we had each winner sign their names in finger paint, which was included with each profile in print.

To promote the section ahead of time, I made five other Lego sculptures in a variety of colors for announcing the honorees and used Lego people for slideshows showing their lives outside of work. With the help of our photographer Dennis McCoy and reporter Scott Rodd, I filmed a timelapse of me building the cover for social media as well. Finally, I created the online presentation as well, deciding on using our collections feature to display the short profiles.
